Planning a wedding in a Nashville venue or the Tennessee mountains? While your planner can handle the floor-length linens and the champagne wall, you’ve got one very important "to-do" that they can’t do for you: getting that license! Here is everything you need to know to make it legal in TN.
The Quick Checklist
Where to go: Any County Clerk’s office in Tennessee. You don’t have to get it in the county where you’re marrying!
When to go: The license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
Who goes: Both partners must appear in person.
What to Bring
Proof of ID: A valid driver’s license, state ID, or Passport.
Social Security Number: You don't always need the physical card, but you must know the number. We recommend bringing it anyways just in case.
Proof of Age: You must be 18+.
The "Pro-Planner" Savings Tip
The standard fee in Tennessee is roughly $100 (it varies slightly by county). However, you can get a $60 discount if you complete a qualifying premarital preparation course! Many of our couples do this online—it takes about four hours, and you just need to bring the notarized completion certificate to the clerk.
Important TN Rules
No Waiting Period: You can get your license and get married the very same day.
The Officiant: After the "I Do’s," your officiant must return the signed license to the Clerk within three business days.
